- [S5] Obituary.
Vernon E. Schilling, 79, entered Eternal Life on Friday, January 4, 2008. From a young age, Vernon was extremely devoted to his country, enlisting in the Navy at the age of 14 during World War II. He was given the rank of HA1 (Hospital Apprentice First Class). While in the Navy, he managed to survive the sinking of his ship, the USS Liscome Bay, sadly losing many of his fellow comrades in the attack. He later was stationed on the ship, Wake Island. Vernon was a member of the American Veterans Roman Milewski Post #4, the CBI Veterans, as well as Disabled American Veterans, DAV, Chapter 1. Although not an outwardly religious man, Vernon's devotion as a volunteer spoke volumes of living an admirable life. He volunteered as a VAVS Hospital Representative at the Zablocki Medical Center and received the Distinguished Service Award for his many years and thousands of hours of dedicated service to his fellow veterans. In 1998, he was named Veteran of the Year by Milwaukee County's Veteran's Board of Directors of the War Memorial Corporation. Vernon truly enjoyed his work in the automobile industry in both sales and management. Throughout his professional career, some of the dealerships he worked at were Bob Tolkan, Dodge City, and Foster Pontiac. Beloved husband of the late Arlene Isken Schilling. Loving father of Deborah (Bob) Chesney, Tamara Maddente (Norbert) Gilmore, Peter (Karen) Schilling, and the late Charles Doyle (Sandra Doyle). Dear brother of Arlon 'Arlie' (Mary) Schilling, Jerry 'Buddy' (Betty) Schilling, Janet (Will) White, Geraldine 'Honey' (Jim) O'Neil, Joan Lutz, Diana Hilbrand, the late Wallace 'Butch' Schilling, and the late Elmo Schilling. He is further survived by 12 grandchildren and 27 great-grand- children, as well as other relatives, good friends, and other committed veterans. Visitation will be held at the Feerick Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 8, 2008, from 4 until 6 p.m., with both a Religious and Veteran service commencing at 6 p.m. Interment will take place later in the week on Friday, January 11, 2008, at Union Grove Veteran Cemetery. (Time of committal has not been set.) Memorials in Vernon's name may be made to the Disabled American Veterans, DAV Memorial Program, P.O.
