SHARON, PA. ? Lloyd K. Ross, 87, formerly of Valley View Road in Hermitage, Pa., passed away unexpectedly from complication of a stroke at 2:10 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, while vacationing in Florida.
Lloyd was born Dec. 6, 1925, in the upper peninsula of Ironwood, Mich., the son of Carl and Anna M. Smaltz Ross.
His family relocated to Mercer County and he attended a one room school house in New Virginia, and the Prospect Heights Grade School. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1944.
As a youngster, he spent many summers working at his grandmother Smaltz?s farm, where he delivered milk from their dairy.
He served with the U.S. Army Air Corps in the European Theater of Operations, specifically in Kitzingen, Germany. He reached the rank of Sergeant and was honored to have been present at the infamous Nurnberg War Trials.
Shortly after the war, he completed a two year course in photography in Chicago. He later returned to Mercer County and gained employment at the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation, and the former GATX, Masury plant. He attended Bricklaying school and was a mason contractor for 33 years. Along with his wife, he owned and operated the former Carriage Inn Restaurant across from the Mercer County Court House. In his later years, he worked at both the Sharon Regional Health System and the Medical Arts Building on Elm Avenue doing maintenance.
A long time member of the Church of Notre Dame in Hermitage, Pa., he was proud to had been on the building committee during the construction of the current church.
He was a life member and past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 684, Sharon. He was also a member of the Fourth Degree Sharon Assembly.
He married his high school sweetheart, the former Eleanor A. Ruffo, on April, 12, 1947, she passed away Feb. 19, 2006.
He leaves his two daughters, Cheryl Barillare and her husband, William of Columbiana and Janell Somich and her husband, David of Reno, Nev.; six grandchildren, Leah and Stacia Gruitza of Sharon, Pa., Jason Gruitza of Hermitage, Natalie Somich Goguen and Jonathan Somich of Nevada, and Nicholas Somich of Connecticut; five great-grandchildren, Elleana Danilovics, Alexander, Isabelle and Rowen Somich, and Cordelia Goguen; a sister, Margaret Hall of California; and two sisters-in-law, Patricia Ruffo of Hermitage, and Dolores Kompas of Sharpsville, Pa.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Robert Ross.

Friends will be received Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, from 1:30 p.m. until the time of service at St. Rose Cemetery Chapel, Dutch Lane, Hermitage.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at 2:30 p.m. at St. Rose Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor of the Church of Notre Dame, as celebrant.
Full military honors will be rendered by the honor guard from the Hickory VFW Post 6166.
Inurnment will be at St. Rose Cemetery Mausoleum, Hermitage.
