BRUNSWICK ? Hervey A. ?Tess? Tessier, 84, of Spring Street, longtime owner and operator of Tess Market, died Sunday, Oct. 1, at Parkview Adventist Medical Center.
He was born in Livermore Falls, Aug. 9, 1922, the son of Hector and Flora Morrisette Tessier.
He attended Livermore schools where he played football.
During World War II, he served in the United States Marine Corps, in Guadalcanal. He was the sole survivor of the 1st Division during the war, serving as a machine gun setter.
After the war, he attended Farmington State Teachers College.
On July 12, 1947, he married Pauline Gamache and moved to Brunswick.
For six years he served as assistant manager for 1st National Store. In 1955 he purchased Pleasant St. Market, which he continued to own as Tess Market until his death.
In his early years, he started with hotdogs, then made italians and added pizza. He was always concerned about his customers? well-being and always treated them fairly with an honest price. In his earlier days, during Christmas he made food baskets for people in his store.
He was a self taught wine connoisseur and in 1972 started selling wine in his store. Customers would seek him out for help with choosing an appropriate wine as well as his ability to special order specific wines.
He enjoyed spending time at his camp on Tacoma Lake in Litchfield. He enjoyed fishing, horse races and was an avid sports fan, enjoying the Red Sox and Patriots.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 202 in Topsham, Knights of Columbus Sekenger Council in Brunswick, and St. John?s the Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Brunswick; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis Lamaree and her husband, Dennis, and Anne Talbot and her husband, Bruce, all of Brunswick; two brothers, Norman Tessier of Massachusetts and Conrad Tessier of Turner; a sister, Jacqueline Conzemius of Ames, Iowa. He is also survived by two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and two step grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a brother, Paul Tessier, in 2004.
