- [S5] Obituary.
Betty R. Troumbly, age 98, of Grand Rapids, MN, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at her home.
Betty Reine was born January 3, 1926, in Grand Rapids, Minnesota to Ad?lore and Myrtle (Padgette) Gamache. She grew up in Grand Rapids and attended Grand Rapids Schools.
On July 31, 1945, Betty was united in marriage to Raymond ?Shorty? Troumbly at the Itasca County Courthouse in Grand Rapids. Together they raised 10 children in their home that Shorty built in Taconite. Betty was a woman of prayer, had unwavering faith in Jesus, and was very active in the Taconite Catholic church. She loved unconditionally and would do anything for her family. A woman of strong convictions, she still respected and accepted all of her loved ones, despite any differences of choices and beliefs. In her home, if you wanted a pet - horse, dog, cat, or 3-legged bunny - you got it! She was a member of the Taconite Legion women?s auxiliary, Taconite Elderberries, Council of Catholic Women, and local PTA. Betty was a patriot - she loved America and was proud to be a veteran's wife. Her famous "Betty's Beans" are a coveted recipe and just one of the many fruits from her past as a hardworking homemaker. She loved making everyone's favorite goodies for Christmas and creating elaborate Mayday baskets, stuffed with treats and crafts to deliver to everyone. She always served others around her and gave generously, never expecting anything in return. She looked out for the least of these, bringing meals and goodies to others, and giving gifts on any occasion. She loved her many friends and delighted in parties, morning coffee dates, Bingo, and Bunko. As an avid Minnesota sports fan, she never wavered on her loyalty despite the many disappointments. She especially loved watching her husband Shorty, her sons, and grand- and great-grandchildren play hockey. She was an extraordinary writer and was well known for her poetry. She could always make you smile, even to the end of her days, with her witty sense of humor.
She is survived by her ten children, Art (Judy) Troumbly of Ishpeming, MI, Rebecca (Gary) Murphy of Grand Rapids, MN, Michael (Debra) Troumbly of Taconite, MN, Derek (Joan) Troumbly of Grand Rapids, MN, Patrick (ShalyMar) Troumbly of Rochester, MN, Darren Troumbly of Balsam, MN, Daniel Troumbly (Lonnie) of Grand Rapids, MN, Joel (Molly) Troumbly of Cohasset, MN, Jill Troumbly of Grand Rapids, MN, and Jason (Svetlana) Troumbly of Fargo, ND; grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren ? all told, 143 direct descendants; sisters-in-law Jeanette Troumbly of Taconite, MN, Barbara Troumbly of Grand Rapids, MN; many nieces and nephews and other extended family members.
