Angelline "Angie" Parent Gamache, 80, died Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 at Alaska Native Medical Center.
Angie was born Feb. 28, 1932 to Denis and Massa (Effemka) Parent in Crooked Creek. She was raised in Crooked Creek until the age of 12, when her Dad moved her to Anchorage to attend school. She graduated from Anchorage High School in 1950.
She met the love of her life, Sgt. Clarence Gamache, while he was stationed in the Army-Air Force at Elmendorf Air Force Base. They met at the local roller rink where Clarence was a roller skate guard and Angie worked in the snack bar.
On April 14, 1951 Clarence and Angie were married at Notre Dame Church in Adams, Massachusetts. They lived on the Mohawk Trail in Adams from 1952-1954.
In 1954, they moved back to Alaska, living in McGrath then homesteading in Nikiski. Ever the rural hostess, the homestead and fish camp were always full of extra family and friends who were instructed along the trail to the house to fill the coffee can up with water and bring it to the house if they wanted coffee otherwise go without!
In 1960, they purchased land on O'Malley Road and Gamache Drive where Angie and Clarence raised their six children. She was the chief net mender for all the years of commercial fishing, and led the family effort of filling the smokehouse and canning and kippering the catch. If you were around at that time, family or friends got recruited to help in the process.
Angie was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Clarence Gamache.
Angie is survived by her sister Agnes Harrison, daughters Nancy DePalma, Susan Gamache (Jim Fitzmaurice), Judy Winchester (Jim), Margaret Nicolai (Matthew), Mary Chouinard (Tom), and son Joseph Gamache (Debraly). She was "Nana" to David, Anya and Eliana Nicolai, Christopher Chouinard, Connor, Claire and Caroline Gamache..
Angie was strong willed and said what was on her mind. She will be remembered for her independent thinking, self-sufficiency and hard work. She was fully devoted to family and friends. She passed on love and sharing to all those she met along the way. She left this world a better place for having lived.
A celebration of life will be held Friday, Nov. 9 at the Alaska Zoo Gateway Event Hall, 4731 O'Malley Road, Anchorage, from 4-8 p.m.
