ST. ALBANS TOWN - Mrs. Jeannette Lucille Fortune (Mom, Mema, Mitt and Nan), a lifelong St. Albans Town resident, died early Thursday evening, Jan. 31, 2008, in the Franklin County Rehab Center following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Her devoted and loving family was at her side.
Born in St. Albans, Vt., she was the daughter of the late Ferdinand Sr. and Lydia (Bohannon) Gamache. She attended the former Holy Angels Parochial School and in October of 1967, was married to Frederick E. Fortune, who survives her. Jeannette was previously employed at M.H. Jeannette's family was most important in her life. Her parents both died when she was at a young age and she assumed the role of helping to raise her nine brothers and sisters. She was famous for her baked beans, potato salad, as well as her ability to cook for an army of family members at a moment's notice. Along with her sisters, daughter and son-in-law, she looked forward to traveling to Warrensburg, N.Y. to the once a year garage sale and for 25 years enjoyed her yearly trips with "The Girls," Christmas shopping in New Hampshire. Jeannette was a collector of many things including blue cobalt glass, oil lamps and angels. "She now lives among the angels."
In addition to her husband, Fred of the Perry Road in St. Albans Town, Jeanette leaves her children, Suzette Laroche and husband, Raymond of Highgate Center, Patrick "Tick" Lajoie and his partner, Carol Abbott of Jeffersonville, and Armand "Bun" Lajoie and wife, Anne Marie of St. Albans Town; four grandchildren, Darci Benoit and husband, B.J. of Barre, Amanda Lajoie and companion, Sy Reaves of Jeffersonville and Ryan and Evan Lajoie of St. Albans Town. She was also expecting her first great-grandchild, (Darci and B.J's. baby), to be born in March of this year; nine brothers and sisters, Ferdinand "Junior" Gamache and wife, Joyce, Edmund Gamache and wife, Gail, Maurice "Joe" Gamache and Richard "Buvy" Gamache and wife, Linda, all of St. Albans Town, Joan "Girly" Roy and husband, Paul of Sheldon, Debra Whitney of Franklin, Janice Eaton and husband, James of Milton, Betty Ann Gamache of St. Albans City and Rebecca "Becky" Gamache of Georgia; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She also leaves a very special friend, co-worker and confidant, Mark Batchelder of Alburgh.
Besides her parents, Ferdinand Sr. and Lydia Gamache, Jeannette was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Gamache; and also in 1995 by a brother-in-law, Carlton Whitney.
A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at 11 a.m. from The Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Ave., Swanton. Mr. Mark Batchelder a longtime family friend, will officiate.
