Deceased Name: BARBARA GAMACHE BELKNAP
Grew Up in fishing village of Galilee Barbara Gamache Belknap died February 22, 2008 at the age of 86 in Lake Forest, California. Barbara was born in Hartford, Connecticut on January 7, 1922 to George E.
Gamache and Alice Hagstrom Gamache. She spent her early life in the small fishing village of Galilee, Rhode Island, where her father was a well-known lobsterman.
She survived the 1938 hurricane where her family and other relatives lost everything. She graduated from South Kingston High School in 1940.
Barbara married her high school sweetheart, Earle W. Belknap, Jr., the son of Earle W. Belknap, Sr.
and Alice Thornley Belknap of Wakefield, RI, on July 30, 1943, in Narragansett. She lived in many locations as she moved about the country in support of her husband's career. In her later years, Barbara enjoyed nothing more then a good book, a crossword puzzle, or a game of cards. She remained remarkably clear headed and self sufficient to the end.
Survivors are her children:Earle III and Leighton of Lake Forest; Margaret Payne of Irvine, Calif.; Douglas and his wife Barbara of Juneau, Alaska; Scott and his wife Lora of Franklin, Mass.; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister Joan Senape and her husband Anthony and a sister-in-law Mary Bannister Belknap, who live in Wakefield.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Earle, both her parents and her brother George E. Gamache, Jr. At her request there will be no services. Her remains will be interred in a National Cemetery along with those of her husband.
