Lonnie Royce Shelby, 82, of New Bern, died peacefully on Sunday morning, April 8, 2018. He is survived by his wife Nancy Shelby; his two daughters, Deborah Shelby of Bolton, VT; Rebecca Shelby, and her husband Alan Gamache, of New Bern and his granddaughter, Ursula Gamache.
Lon Shelby was a retired history and sociology Professor Emeritus at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, IL. He was a scholar, having published several articles and two books on medieval masonry techniques in military engineering and the construction of Gothic cathedrals. He is still considered the primary source on "constructive geometry", a term he coined. In addition to teaching and research at SIU-C, he also served as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School and as the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
Throughout his life was an avid sailor, enjoyed tennis, camping and upon retirement, building beautiful wood furniture in his workshop. Funeral services will be held at Garber United Methodist Church in New Bern, NC, on Sunday, April 15 at 3:00 PM in the Sanctuary, with a reception to follow.
