Rudolph "Rudy" P. Smaltz of 766 N. Keel Ridge Road, Hermitage, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 5:55 p.m. Monday (4-14-08) in his residence with his family at his side. He was 90.
Mr. Smaltz was born Tuesday, May 22, 1917, in Ironwood,
Mich., a son of Frank and Mary Schrapewtz Smaltz. He attended Hermitage schools. Rudy worked as a foreman in the
cold roll department of the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s
Farrell plant for 37 years, retiring in 1975. He also worked as a carpenter and mason for a number of years, contributing to many buildings throughout the Shenango Valley with his specialty as construction of fireplaces.
A decorated veteran, he served with the Air Force during
World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Sharon, where he served as an usher for many years. Rudy also belonged to Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 103; and Slovenian Workingmen's Educational
Club, both Sharon; American Legion Post 432, Wheatland; Polish National Alliance; and the National Rifle Association of America. Mr. Smaltz enjoyed bowling, golfing and hunting with his family and friends.
A loving husband, father, and grandfather, his greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren. His wife, the former Laura G. Stanek, whom he married Dec. 10, 1960, survives at home. Also surviving are: his son, Richard Smaltz and his wife Linda, Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Agnes Sherman, Sharpsville; and Margaret Bertolosio, Warren, Ohio; two grandchildren, Christa and John Smaltz; a stepdaughter, Janet Hoovler and her husband Tom, Hermitage; his stepson, Raymond Chapin, Georgia; several nieces and nephews; and his close friend, Richard "Dick" Gealy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Helen K. Santell, Mary Koluncich, Anna Ross and Rose
Vranjos; and five brothers, Frank, John, Martin, Joseph
and Matthew Smaltz.
Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, Hermitage.
