George L. Gamache, 78, of 68 Hastings Street, Greenfield, MA, died Monday January 21, at Northampton Rehabilitation and Nursing Home in Northampton.
He was born in Nashua, NH, October 23, 1929, the son of Leo and Ida (Jean) Gamache. He was a 1948 graduate of Nashua High School. While in high school he played football and was a member of the National High School Football Hall of Fame. He attended American International College in Springfield but graduated from Keene State Teachers College in 1957. In 1963, he received his Master's Degree in Education from Rivier College in Nashua.
A Korean War veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952.
A school teacher for 30 years, he started his career at Sanderson Academy in Ashfield in 1959. Upon the opening of Mohawk Trial Regional High School in Buckland in 1967, he taught at Mohawk until his retirement in 1987.
He and his wife the former Mary Ellis whom he married on June 25, 1960 lived in Shelburne Falls until moving to Greenfield in 1993.
He was a parishioner of Holy Trinity Church in Greenfield. He was also a member of the MA Retired Teachers Association and a member of American Legion Post 481 in Greenfield.
He was a collector of baseball cards and enjoyed making latchhook rugs as well as doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors besides his wife include 2 sons, James A. of Shelburne Falls, Matthew G. of Orange; 2 daughters, Juliana A. Allard of Farmville, NC, Suzanne M. Vight of Claremont; 1 brother Alfred Gamache of Lameta, CA, and 3 sisters, Florence Leveille of Hudson, NH, Cecile Desjardins of Nashua, NH, Teresa Malone of Manchester, NH, and 4 grandchildren, Mandi Gamache, Stephen and Melissa Allard, and Elizabeth Vight.
A liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Friday January 25 at 9:00 am at Holy Trinity Church. Burial will be in Arms Cemetery in Shelburne Falls. Calling hours were held on Thursday January 24 between 6-8 pm at Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St. Greenfield. It is suggested that donations be made to the Oncology Dept. Baystate Franklin Medical Center, 164 High Street, Greenfield, MA 01301.
