Died:
- Died from the result of injuries from a shelter collapse when she and son David were struck two years prior at the Detroit Farmer's Market.
THE TERRIFIC GALE
At 12:20 in the afternoon on Dec 24, 1890 a terrific gale leveled the Eastern Market Bldg on Russell Street in Detroit. The whole structure went down with a crash like a string of children's blocks set up in a line. Three persons were severely injured, horses were killed and four others injured.
The three persons caught under the first roof which fell were Mrs. John C Baumgartner and her son David, aged 19, living in Fraser and Adolphus Baron of Newport, Monroe County. Mrs. Baumgartner and her son were sitting on their wagon under the south wing when the roof fell. Both of them were caught and pinned to the ground by falling timbers. Mrs. Baumgartner had her left arm broken above the elbow; her right shoulder dislocated and received a severe flesh wound on her right hand. She was extricated from the debris and taken to the office of Dr. A. Kaiser, No. 446 Gratiot Ave. Her son David, who was on the wagon with her, jumped from it, but was struck to the ground. He received several severe scalp wounds and internal injuries which may prove fatal. He was taken to Harper Hospital by ambulance. One of the horses attached to the wagon was killed and the other badly cut.
The story of The Terrific Gale is from an article in "The Evening News" dated December 24, 1890; Detroit Michigan
